Background

Viscogel AB was founded in 2008 by Dr. Mats Andersson based on his extensive research on the physiological and biological properties of chitosan. His discoveries on the relationship between the degree of deacetylation and the physiological and biological properties of chitosan led to the development and characterization of Viscosan® and ViscoGel® in collaboration with researchers at the Karolinska Institute.

ViscoGel®, in contrast to other standard chitosan gels, maintains its three dimensional structure and does not precipitate when subjected to physiological conditions e.g. when injected.  This characteristic in combination with its high drug loading capacity and ability to induce an immune response makes it suitable as a vaccine adjuvant and in drug delivery systems. The company has received a grant from Vinnova and will receive funding from the EU to support its development program in vaccine delivery.
